GIRLS (1980)

From influential director Just Jaeckin (Emmanuelle), a coming-of-age cult classic of the 1980s featuring a young Anne Parillaud (Luc Besson's Nikita).

Girls is the long-unseen 1980 coming-of-age cult classic from acclaimed French filmmaker Just Jaeckin, best known for Emmanuelle and The Story of O. Set amid the restless nightlife and youthful yearning of early '80s France, the film follows three inseparable friends--Suzanne (Charlotte Walior), Annie (Zoé Chauveau), and Catherine (Anne Parillaud, later of La Femme Nikita)--who spend their nights at discos and cinemas chasing excitement, love, and identity. Tagging along is Suzanne's younger sister Betty (Isabelle Mejias), whose naive attempts to emulate her older peers soon lead her into adult experiences she isn't ready to face.

Jaeckin, celebrated for his sensual visual style and nuanced portrayals of women, transforms what could have been a simple teen story into a lyrical exploration of innocence, sexuality, and the delicate threshold between adolescence and adulthood. His camera lingers on fleeting gestures, quiet glances, and the bittersweet rituals of growing up--while Eric Stewart's (10cc) evocative soundtrack captures the romantic melancholy of the era.

Presented by Cult Epics in a stunning 4K restoration from the original negative, this Blu-ray edition brings Girls to audiences in its most complete and visually luminous form yet. The release includes an insightful audio commentary by Jeremy Richey, the essay "Who Is Just Jaeckin?", Jaeckin's final filmed interview from 2022, and a new conversation with actress Isabelle Mejias, along with archival footage from a 1982 French TV feature featuring Jaeckin and his stars. The package also includes Girls: The German Cut and the film's original theatrical trailers.A poignant companion piece to Little Darlings and Foxes, Girls stands as one of the most evocative depictions of youth and female friendship in European cinema--an intimate portrait of longing, discovery, and the fragile beauty of first freedom, seen through the lens of one of France's most distinctive auteurs.
